Exploring the Norwegian fjords

World Tours

BERGEN, NORWAY – The fjords are Norwegian’s biggest attraction and they attract visitors from all over the world. Bergen and the surrounding region are situated in the heart of the world-famous fjords. It is no accident that the fjords in Bergen region are included on UNESCO’s famous  World Heritage List. Situated between the world’s longest fjord, the Sognefjord and the Hardangerfjord, Bergen and the surrounding region is the best starting point for scenic experiences.

The Bergen region has a fantastic coastline with thousands of islands and a buzzing cultural scene. There are many possibilities for people looking for active experiences. The island archipelago and majestic fjords make for highly varied scenery. Waterfalls cascade down the mountainsides, show glitters on the mountain tops and lush green pastures line the fjords.

Lovely small villages line the fjords like a string of pearls and fishing villages cling to the shoreline. This is a land of contrasts from gentle and mild to rugged and wild all natural and unspoilt. The scenery is not just something to be admired, combine the fantastic scenery with some of the huge range of invigorating and exciting activities on offer.

You can visit some of the countess islands out at the coast. Wonder at the drama of mountains and glaciers reflected in the still, deep water of the fjords. Admire the green hills and try some local delicacies. Take part in nature-based activities such as walking, sale, fishing, paragliding and summer skiing, to name but a few.  There are activities for extreme enthusiasts and for friends looking for shared experiences in the great outdoors. Distances are short and you can fit a lot in even if you are have a few days. It’s easy to get here no matter where you come from by boat, train, bus or car. There are number of fjord round tours that show you the fjords and mountains in a day trip and are available all year round.

Bergen is a unique city, not least because of its beautiful setting and world famous surroundings. The city has all that is required for active experiences. Its seven mountains, the surrounding fjords and fantastic coastline with thousands of islands mean that the Bergen region has an exceptional  proximity to nature and very popular recreational areas. The Floibanen Funicular, Bergen’s most popular attraction, runs from the city centre to Mount Floyen and the trip takes about 7 minutes. From the impressive viewing area, you can admire magnificent views of the city, the surrounding mountains and fjords. In addition to many walking trails, there is also a restaurant, cafe, souvenir shop and play area for children.

The Funicular runs every day, all year round, from early in the morning until 11 p.m.If you take the Floibanen funicular or the Ulriken cable car up to the mountains, you can walk for hours on marked trails while enjoying panoramic views of the city.

Out near the coast, you can choose between many alternative walks on the North Sea Trail. If you prefer city walks, we suggest you join one of the many fascinating guided walking tours. If you bring your own equipment, with Bergen as your base, you can take part in many different activities, such as fjord and river rafting, scuba diving, ocean rafting, sailing, kayaking, climbing, abseiling, mountain and  glacier walks, cycling trips etc. If you wish to experience things together with others, we recommend white water rafting at Voss, trip on the Flam and Hardanger, the Norway active round trip featuring cycling, kayaking and rafting or a simple fishing trip on the TSMY Weller from the city centre.

Hardanger is one of the most beautiful regions in Norway. It offers a broad range of activities and has good museums and exciting nature-based experiences. You can enjoy complete peace up on the Hardangervida  mountain plateau, go on a guided glacier walk from Jondal or Odda,  climb the ferrata routes in Tyssedal or go on a mountain hike to Trolltunga.

Surrounded by steep mountainside, cascading waterfalls and narrow valleys, Flam is ideal for people seeking unparalleled nature experiences.

The trip on the Flam Railway from the fjord to the mountains has been voted one of the world’s most beautiful trip journeys, and there are great cycling and walking opportunities along the many trails in the Flamsdalen valley worry or in the mountains. Flam is also part of Norway’s ‘nutshell’ most popular round trip.

The best way you can experience the famous west – coast Norwegian scenery with its steep mountains, towering hills and narrow fjords as well as picturesque  Modalen, is to book one of many Bergen Fjord sightseeing tours departing from the Bergen harbor.

The most popular trip through the narrow strong currents of Mostraumen is an experience in itself. There is an hour long break in Modalen, where you can explore the village and enjoy local produce at Mobryggja cafe. Tours have comfortable boats with a sun deck and kiosk. Guiding is available in several languages. All of fjord cruises offer 15% discount on the price of an ordinary adult ticket when at least 15 people travel together on the same ticket.

There is far too much to see and do in the whole Bergen region for just a one day. Bergen offers a varied range of accommodation that suits all tastes and wallets. You can choose a hotel with a view of Vagen harbor area or a hotel surrounded by old wooden Bergen houses. The city has everything from the finest modern hotels to simple B&B accommodation,  often in private homes.

  1. When my friends and I got out of college this was going to be our trip to celebrate. We never made it but it is still on my list. Just something about Norway that I have always loved.
