There is much of interest to see around Darwin itself. We are listing some of the most popular visitor attractions in and around the City including a suggested walking tour which takes in some of the significant sites of historic and cultural interest.
We begin with culture, and a must-visit to the Darwin Entertainment Centre, or a performance by the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, or visit of the Chant Contemporary Art Space.
Darwin’s cultural heritage is a unique blend of ancient aboriginal custom, European pioneering Legacy, World War II history and fresh Asian influence.
A visit to the eclectic collection of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, just 4 km from the city centre is a great place to continue your exploration of Darwin’s heritage. The Art Gallery houses a comprehensive display of indigenous art and artifacts that reveal much about the various aboriginal groups from Darwin and its surrounding.
If the city’s nightlife and entertainment is more your scene, the pubs, bars and nightclubs that dominate the popular Mitchell Street Precinct are a must as well.
Darwin boasts a thriving market scene through the year, a hugely popular attraction for locals and visitors alike. Operating during the weekend at Coolalinga, Nightcliff, Parap Shopping Village and Rapid Creek, you won’t be disappointed as you discover the sights, tastes, sounds and above all the hustle- bustle and friendly atmosphere that make our market scene such a unique attraction.
During the dry season the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are held on Thursday and Sunday evenings from May to October, and Palmerston and Rural markets every Friday evening from April to October.
At Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, market patrons can enjoy the tastes of five continents, over 50 different food stalls, more than 1200 different menu items, browse through handcrafted jewellery including crocodile products, indigenous art and handcrafted jewellery. Simply settle down on the grass area with the locals and soack up the ambient music and the tropical atmosphere as the sun sets on another tropical day.
Just a short trip from the city, offering an eclectic mix of restaurants, cafes and bars set and board work around the busy marina and overlooking the harbour, Cullen Bay is the ideal place to relax. After pamper yourself at Cullen Bay Day Spa enjoy a cooling drink at one of Cullen’s Bay many cafes before deciding what to eat, seafood, pasta, succulent steaks, Greek Mezze or exotic Thai cuisine, the choice is yours.
Cullen Bay Marina is the boarding point for a number of the popular Harbour cruises. Evening cruises offer visitors the opportunity to witness one of the top and glorious sunsets whilst relaxing on a leisurely cruise around the magnificent harbour. A regular daily passenger ferry service operates across the Harbour to Mandorah, approximately 20 minutes distance, offering an opportunity to take in the unique view across the harbour to the changing city skyline. Several fishing Tours and charters operate from Cullen Bay Marina.
Squealing, rampaging and an inherent need to escape out watchful eyes, its not a surprise if you’ll be looking for spots to let them loose. You’ll be glad to know there are many Top end spots that will keep kids learning, laughing and having fun and best of all you’ll love them too. Wave Lagoon is one of them. You will embrace your endless Summer at Darwin Lagoon. Part of the Darwin Waterfront Presinct the Wave Lagoon is located at Two Strokes Hill Road and is open daily between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. With swells up to 1.7 m the kids can enjoy 10 different wave patterns using boogie boards and water tubes. The toddlers can enjoy a shallow zone adjacent to the main Lagoon.
Another kids attraction is Window on the Wetlands. When heading out to Kakadu, you’ll pass a big blue building on top of a hill just outside of Humpty Doo. Thats the Window on the Wetlands. By now the kids will be due for a brake and this free facility provides great fun for the kids to interactively learn about the environment in the Top End. Other Kids fun attractions worth to mention are Territory Wildlife Park, Palmerston Water and skate park, The Fun Bus and Flight Path Golf and outdoor recreation.
A short journey from Darwin City take you to the outer Darwin region.
The city of Palmerston is the commercial hub of the area and is one of Australia’s fastest growing cities. After a morning shopping, travel further South along the Stuart Highway and spend some time exploring nearby Howard Springs Nature Park with its huge barramundi and families of turtles swimming in the shady springs and the many attractions and interesting historical sites of the region.
The outer Darwin region encompasses the areas east and west of the Stuart Highway. Travelling east, call in to the small rural centre of Humpty Doo, featuring many mango farms and large properties. Take a cruise on the Adelaide river and watch as giant crocs out of the water for balt catch a barra on the Mary River or in the surrounding billabongs and estuaries, or join a guided wetland Cruise on Corroboree and Rockhole Billabongs with majestic scenery, saltwater crocodiles and plenty of bird life.
Travelling West get up close with huge raptors at the Birds of Prey presentation at the Territory Wildlife Park, explore the historic WWII site on the Cox Peninsula or make a visit to Crazy Acres Farm Shop for homemade ice cream.

I’ve been to Australia, the east coast, Sydney, Brisbane, Cairns, great barrier reef, but Darwin that seemed to be really far away. I hope to visit one day.

There are flight connections to Darwin. It is a completely different and unexpected experience. Quite opposite to the Australian crowded cities.
